Why humming helps
Vibration as a gentle nervous system cue.
Humming creates vibration along the vagus nerve as it passes through the throat and face. That mechanical signal, combined with a naturally lengthened exhale, is a soft but powerful cue for calm.
It also boosts nasal nitric oxide, which supports circulation and oxygen delivery - part of why a minute of humming can leave you feeling clearer.
Pitch doesn't matter. Volume doesn't matter. Find something that feels good in your face and chest, and let the sound be ordinary.
A minute or two of soft humming is one of the most accessible regulation tools you have. You can do it in the car, at your desk, while making tea.
Key points
- Vibration plus long exhale is the active ingredient.
- Pitch and volume don't matter.
