Creating gentle daily routines

Small, steady acts of care can make each day a little easier to live in.

Routines give the nervous system something it can predict. When parts of the day are familiar, there is less to decide and less to brace for.

A gentle routine is small. A glass of water when you wake up. Stepping outside for a few minutes. Putting your phone down before bed. Each one is a way of looking after the person you will be later.

Consistency matters more than size. Two minutes most days tends to help more than an hour once in a while.

Routines are there to support your life, not to become another thing to get right. If you miss a day, the next one is still there. Heal to live, don't live to heal.

Key points

  • Predictable moments mean less to brace for.
  • Small and regular beats big and rare.
  • Missing a day is part of it.
