Why breathwork helps
Breath is one of the most direct ways to shift state.
Breath is the one part of the autonomic system you can consciously guide. Every time you change the breath, you change the chemistry and rhythm the body uses to decide whether to brace or settle.
When you inhale, the heart speeds up slightly. When you exhale, it slows. Longer exhales bias the system toward the parasympathetic branch - the rest-and-digest side.
The simplest rule of thumb: exhale longer than you inhale. A 4-in / 6-out, a 4-in / 8-out, or 7-in / 11-out all work. The exact count matters less than the longer exhale.
Nasal breathing adds another layer - it slows the breath, filters and warms the air, and improves the body's tolerance of carbon dioxide, which is closely linked to a feeling of calm.
Two or three minutes is enough to feel a shift. Daily practice slowly raises your baseline.
Key points
- Longer exhale = parasympathetic cue.
- Nasal, low, slow is the general direction.
- Short and daily beats long and occasional.
