Building capacity
How a nervous system gently grows its range.
Capacity is how much your system can hold - sensation, emotion, demand, connection - while staying inside your window of tolerance.
It grows the way a muscle grows: small doses of challenge followed by real recovery. Too much without recovery shrinks capacity. Too little challenge keeps it where it is.
Recovery is the underrated half. Rest, warmth, slow exhales, gentle touch, time with safe people, and ordinary pleasures all count.
On the challenge side, you don't need anything dramatic. Daily life provides plenty. The skill is meeting it from a slightly more resourced place each time.
Capacity isn't built in big breakthroughs. It's built in the quiet, repeated decision to return to yourself.
Key points
- Capacity = challenge + real recovery.
- Rest is half the practice, not the reward.
- Small returns build more range than big breakthroughs.
