Butterfly Hug
When you feel anxious, activated, tearful, or need to soothe yourself with safe, containing touch.
Why it helps
The Butterfly Hug is a science-backed, self-soothing technique that calms the nervous system during stress. By using alternating, rhythmic taps across the chest, it triggers bilateral brain stimulation. This physical rhythm signals safety to your body, quickly settling an overwhelmed or anxious mind.
How to practice
- 1
Sit comfortably and take one slow breath, letting your shoulders soften.
- 2
Cross your arms over your chest so each hand rests just below the opposite collarbone.
- 3
Hook your thumbs together to form the 'butterfly' - fingers point up toward your shoulders.
- 4
Close your eyes or soften your gaze.
- 5
Slowly tap one hand, then the other, alternating left-right, at the pace of a slow heartbeat.
- 6
Breathe naturally. Let the rhythm be steady and gentle - this is not exercise, it's soothing.
- 7
Continue for 1-2 minutes, or until you feel a small shift settle through your chest.
- 8
Pause, drop your hands, and notice what changed.
